The Challenge

Saturday, January 31, 2009

Here we have the forward to the book, The Science of Getting Rich by Wallace D. Wattles, it was written by Ed O'Neal in 1975. I thought it might be a good way to preface our upcoming project.

The challenge that faces all of us today is certainly one that is partly of our own making. Most of us consider it a problem and try to treat the symptom rather than the cause. However, a small shift in our thinking and that which seemed to be a problem is seen for what it is - a challenge - one that we can overcome on our own.

This challenge, which most of us view as a problem, is one of money.

First, let us define money. Simplified, it is a medium of exchange which saves us from having to barter our goods and services. Actually, it is much more than that. Faith, hope and trust are also a part of money, and there are many theories about its use and value. The practical and esoteric aspects of money occupy the time and talents of many people.

Here again, we will simplify - money is the teethmarks on the golden rule - do unto others as you would be done unto. The amount of money you get and accumulate is the measure of service you render to others. Another simplicity, several, in fact - "find a need and fill it," "what goes around, comes around," "cast your bread upon the waters" - there are many more. Don't get caught up in them. Seemingly they are simple. However, there are myriads of facets in those statements. Use them to stimulate your thinking, but not as a practice without understanding.

In this small book (
and in our next project) you will find steps to follow which if you do so diligently, striving always for understanding and monitoring your actions objectively, you will walk right into the riches you deserve.

Wallace Wattles, spent his entire life working out the principles and actions found herein. Through trial and error and much study and thought he honed and polished his actions, and in the final years of his life, using these principles and actions, he began to manifest abundance in his life.

He was a pioneer and like the early trappers blazed the trails which became freeways, in this case, to riches. He laid out the groundwork - it is up to you to use the spade.

Questions for today:

Is money a problem for you? or is it a challenge?
What is your definition of money?
What exactly does it mean... that word... money?

So, this was interesting because I had an aha moment while I was mulling this over.

It occured to me that maybe I have been looking at the whole "what can I do for money" thing completely backwards.

What if, instead of thinking about what can I "do" to get money, maybe it would be better to be thinking of "what do I have to offer that is of value and that I would enjoy offering". More of a what can I GIVE vs what can I GET.

So... that was a very interesting turn around...

Welcome back Shirley! Looking forward to learning more about this scientific process.
Money is a challenge, although I used to view it as a solid faced, steep mountain and now, after hanging out on Prosperity Project for awhile, it's more like a decent sized hill!
Money is like men..one is too many and a hundred is not enough. Ha ha ha. A definition..let's see...I was going to say a necessary evil but that makes it sound BAD and I would like money to be GOOD. I think perhaps dropping away all the emotion behind the word is a good idea. After all, it is simply a way to be compensated for work and pay for goods and services. Maybe we screw up by adding more depth to the definition...any time you throw a feeling into the defining of a word, it can trigger a lot of other emotions and change its meaning entirely. Maybe looking at it scientifically is seriously brilliant, Shirley!

Karla - I think you're right - when we look at money as more than just a medium of exchange, we endow it with so much angst and expectation that no wonder it's hard to have very much of it - it just gets HEAVY carrying all that shit around.

I love the idea that money is merely compensation... that just simplifies everything.

"The amount of money you get and accumulate is the measure of service you render to others." -- that's the bit that gave me my aha moment about what can I GIVE vs what can I GET.

And the more I think about it, the more I realize that there's another aspect to it as well. It's not JUST the service you render, it's also how much you yourself value that service.

I could do amazing and wonderful things dirt cheap - and live like a pauper. Or I could charge what is reasonable and fair and have a more comfortable life. Alternatively, I could have an inflated opinion of the value of my goods and services, and find them impossible to even give away because I put too high a price (monetary and emotional) on them... OMG I just realized why I have a closet full of unsold art!!

Wow. We haven't even really got started and I'm having all sorts of "aha" moments!

I read Wally's book a few years ago and cinsuderin when he wrote it was astonished to find the contents so ahead of his time....yet the same rules apply to now....do what you love....live with joy....attract, attract, attract....and i am still feeling my way through the maze of mixed inner messages and practical applications.... and practicing being positive and optimistic.... i did find his ideas written in a beautifully refreshing way.
good to have you back shirley..

Hi delibes - it's good to be in the land of the living !! Great to see you here.

I first read this book way back in 1978. I read it again in the early 1990's - and did a meditational practice of reading one page at the beginning of every day.

And yet, even with all that reading - I never did manage to still find something new now that I'm reading it again.

I love that I'm exploring it again here - slowly - and thoughtfully. Maybe this time I'll actually really "get" it.
