The End of Suffering

Thursday, March 10, 2011

"The end of suffering happens in this very moment,
whether you're watching a terrorist attack or doing the dishes.
And compassion begins at home.
Because I don't believe my thoughts, sadness can't exist.
That's how I can go to the depths of anyone's suffering,
if they invite me,
and take them by the hand and walk them out of it into the sunlight of reality.
I've taken that walk myself."

Playing Catch-up

Sunday, January 30, 2011

Well guys, it looks like I got a little behind schedule here. So today must be catch-up day! Let me see... my successes thus far in this project include the following:
  • I actually have enough money to pay my bills this month despite the fact that I have had more than a week off work unpaid due to terrible winter weather.
  • I was able to get the DVD's I wanted... how cool is that??
  • Thus far, I have not ended up in a ditch or wrapped around a tree even though the dead end gravel road I live on is a solid sheet of ice, and I've had some close calls.
  • One of my health issues has been resolved - and that's nice!
  • Oh, and my neighbors have been court ordered to clean up their mess.
Does anyone else have anything to report? What's working for you? What isn't? Any ideas, thoughts, experiences, insights, questions, stories, etc that you'd like to share? We have been getting some good comments this time around which I love! Thanks guys!

As for the posts from our original project on Praying for Prosperity, looks like It's a list.

A Begging Success Story

Monday, January 24, 2011

We've all heard this story, I'm sure. A 53-year old Brooklyn native Ted Williams, homeless man with ‘golden voice’, gets a full-time job and home offered by Cleveland Cavaliers. He also gets a bunch of help from Dr. Phil, and I don't know who else...

The story goes like this:

A Columbus Dispatch reporter found Ted Williams on the side of the road while he was panhandling. A sign he was carrying reads:

“I have a God given gift of voice. I’m an ex-radio announcer who has fallen on hard times. Please! Any help will be greatfully appreciated. Thank You and God Bless You”

Here is the YouTube video that went viral:

So, this gives me hope! What are the odds, I wonder...

If you were homeless, living in a tent, scrounging for scraps, alchoholic, drug addicted, flat broke, would you, in your wildest imagination think that overnight you'd become a celebrity with a job, a house, and all the psychological counseling you needed to keep that job and that house? And if such an amazing piece of luck could befall Ted Williams - why couldn't something equally amazing befall you? or me? us?

And yes, you are all in this together. That article at the Onion is pretty funny - definitely worth a read!

7 Guidelines for Aspiring Millionaires

Thursday, October 14, 2010

Millionaires have certain guidelines they live by - that's one of the reasons they become Millionaires. If you haven’t created the wealth you desire, it can seem the Wealthy are privy to secrets you aren’t. The biggest secret is – you probably KNOW some of these so-called secrets already! You now need to APPLY them in your life, instead of just knowing them and you too can create your own Millions.

1. CONTINUE LEARNING To become a Millionaire, you must first create a Millionaire Mindset. Many Millionaires believe that your greatest asset is your knowledge. Your thoughts shape your future - choose your thoughts wisely. To realise your full potential, you need to continually be learning, discovering and educating yourself. Invest in your greatest asset by reading books, listening to audios and attending seminars constantly. By continuing your education beyond formal school years you will achieve more in life than you ever imagined.

2. LIVE BELOW YOUR MEANS This may not be the hot tip you expected, but this secret will assist you toward Millionaire status no matter what your income. A quote from Bill Earle sums it up perfectly “If your outgo exceeds your income, then your upkeep will be your downfall”. The typical Millionaire spends less than he earns, and invests the difference. Millionaires prefer to sacrifice high consumption today to achieve financial freedom tomorrow and for a lifetime.

3. BUILD A BUSINESS AROUND WHAT YOU LOVE Most of the richest people in the world own one or more businesses. To create true wealth, you must involve yourself in your own business – preferably doing something you love. Millionaires get that way because they do what they love. They love what they do so much that it rarely feels like work – they put their heart into it and the money just flows. This is where the money is – you will never get rich working for someone else. Find something you love, something you’re passionate about, create a business around what you love and watch the money flow to you.

4. BE PERSISTANT On your way to creating your own millions, you will definitely face some minor and major obstacles. The secret is to overcome these obstacles and move on. Do not give up - be persistent. True long-term wealth is achieved only by striding over, under and through the obstacles along your path to riches. “The road to success leads through the valley of humility, down the path of patience and across the wide barren plains of perseverance. As yet, no short cut has been discovered”

5. LEVERAGE YOUR TIME AND MONEY Millionaires do not have the time nor the inclination to do everything themselves and when it comes to making millions they don’t just use their own money. If you want to be a Millionaire you have to know how to leverage. Millionaires hire the right people to do far more than they possibly could themselves. And they utilise other people’s money to invest in income-producing assets.

6. INVEST IN REAL ESTATE ”One thing the Rich uniformly have in common is that almost without exception – the Rich either made their Wealth in Real Estate or they keep their Wealth in Real Estate” stated world famous Real Estate Investor, Dr. Dolf de Roos. It’s never too late to begin your Real Estate Investing career – with the right education and support you will be able to create long term secure wealth to pass onto future generations. Real Estate investing is one of the best-known ways to create millions – even if you have NO money to begin with!

7. GIVE BACK Many Millionaires are generous with their time and money in helping others. This wasn’t something they began after they became rich, they were givers before, during and after they made their millions. In fact many Millionaires even have their own foundations. They donate a percentage of their wealth to a cause they believe in. The more you give, the more you will receive. Don’t hoard your wealth, share it with others and watch it multiply.

Millionaires dream big, create a strong desire to achieve those dreams and then take consistent action to see their dreams come true. Follow these guidelines and you too can be on the way to your first Million!

You are the next wave, and all of our shoes will be filled by someone. It may as well be you. Never give up trying.

A "B" Student

Sunday, October 10, 2010

Think the wealthy are all smart, friendly, spendthrift, spoiled and privileged? You might be surprised by the real forces behind their success.

Here's secret #7:

"I was a B student."

Mom was right when she said good grades are the key to success -- just not necessarily a big bank account. According to the book "The Millionaire Mind," the median college grade-point average for millionaires is 2.9, and the average SAT score is 1,190 -- hardly Harvard material. In fact, 59% of millionaires attended a state college or university, according to AmEx-Harrison.

When asked to list the keys to their success, millionaires rank hard work first, then education, determination and "treating others with respect." They also say that what they absorbed in class was less important than learning how to study and stay disciplined, says Jim Taylor, the vice chairman of the Harrison Group.

Granted, 48% of millionaires hold an advanced degree, and elite colleges do open doors to careers on Wall Street and in Silicon Valley (not to mention social connections that grease the wheels).

But for every Ph.D. millionaire, there are many more who squeaked through school. Kiyosaki, for one, says the only way he survived college calculus was by "sitting near" the smart kids in class. "We cheated like crazy," he says.

Determination

Thursday, October 07, 2010

Self-Made Millionaires are not smarter or better than you. They have just discovered these secrets and used them to become wealthy. You can do it too.

Here is secret #21:

BE DETERMINED TO ATTAIN YOUR GOALS. Tenacious persistence builds confidence which leads to victory.

My thoughts:

When it comes to blogging and websites, I have that tenacious persistence. When I'm working on an art project, or pulling a class together, hiking in the woods, or doing any one of the things that I love to do - that persistence comes easy. So, I'm having this idea that this is where "do what you love" is easy to figure out. I've got the "juice" for stuff I love - it's all that other stuff - dishes, laundry, marketing, my day job... that's where there is no love, and therefore, no juice. Start talking to me about money and my eyelids get heavy... very heavy... the TV comes on... and next thing you know I'm fast asleep.

So, now what? What's the answer to that, I wonder...

Failure

Wednesday, October 06, 2010

Self-Made Millionaires are not smarter or better than you. They have just discovered these secrets and used them to become wealthy. You can do it too.

Here is secret #20:

FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION. Your mindset is focused on success. You will have success.

So this is what I think:

Last night I was watching season 2 of Breaking Bad, and there was one episode where Walt and Jesse were out in the middle of the desert, and (after a series of unfortunate incidents) found themselves with a dead battery, no water, no cell phones, no food, no one knew where they were, there was no way to walk for help. Whatever could go wrong had gone wrong... The situation looked hopeless. Here's a clip - watch how the energy changes when Jesse adopts the "failure is not an option" attitude.

Now, granted, this is a TV show. I get that it wasn't "real" life. However! And this is important, I think. At one point, they were both going to give up... but they didn't.

I used to write poetry and short stories - I'd send them out to 3 or 4 places... and then give up. I have a closet full of art which I've half-heartedly tried to sell with not much success. It's so not me. I love impossible tasks! I remember the day I made a retaining wall with railroad ties in the pouring down rain, knee deep in mud. I knew it was impossible - and that's why I did it! I climbed dog canyon with only sheer determination keeping my legs moving! I've walked on fire! So what's this roll over and die thing that crops up for me around money? and marketing?

In that same DVD, there was a scene where Walt's brother in law is suffering from depression and post traumatic stress. Walt goes in to talk to him and tells him he needs to get his ass out of bed and go out and kick it. I tried to find a clip or a quote ... no luck yet ... but I'm not giving up! I am, however, going to get out there and kick it!

And what about you? How many times have you been presented with a "hopeless" situation and simply given up? How many times have you preservered despite the hoplessness of it - and managed to make it through?

Don't Settle

Sunday, October 03, 2010

Self-Made Millionaires are not smarter or better than you. They have just discovered these secrets and used them to become wealthy. You can do it too.

Here is secret #17:

GO FOR GREATNESS. Value the best and don't settle for less.

Shirley's notes on this one:

And so I'm looking around my house and noticing that I do settle for less than the best when it comes to personal comfort. On the other hand, I do have really good stuff where it "counts" and that would be.... hmmm... computer, graphics programs, magick, art... Which brought me to a small epiphany. It seems I value what I "do" more than who I am. Interesting.

But... (with me there's always that but)...

How do you NOT settle when you can't afford to buy the best? For example: Food - Organic and fresh, that's the food that's the best. But can I afford it? No. So what do I do? Eat 2 or 3 meals a week of the best food? or 2 meals a day of not the best food? And what about shoes? Do I go barefoot if I can't buy the best shoes? Not have sheets because there isn't enough money for 1500 count Egyptian cotton? How does this work in real life where the electric bill might not get paid because the phone bill was...

And maybe it's just that the Universe knows I'll settle for less. Maybe if I drew a line in the sand and said, "organic and fresh only" and "Nike's or nothing" the money would be there.

Plus, there's that added issue of making do... I could really benefit from a new pair of glasses, but I'm making do with the 10 year old pair that I have because I can get by and I can see well enough. The front steps are getting really rickety, but I'm making do because they are the only front steps I have and they are good enough for now. My towels are threadbare, and yet they still get me dry. Yes, it would be lovely and luxurious to have new and beautiful Egyptian cotton towels, and when is it sensible to buy them if I can't even afford to feed myself properly? In my world of barely getting by - settling for less often means making do with what I have. And is that the same as settling for less? Or a different animal altogether?

Perhaps I should be asking myself what would Bill Gates do if he was in my situation? What would... hmmm... I dunno... who am I trying to emulate here? Andrew Carnegie? Cornelius Vanderbilt? John D Rockefeller? Oprah? suggestions anyone?

Grow The Good

Thursday, September 30, 2010

Self-Made Millionaires are not smarter or better than you. They have just discovered these secrets and used them to become wealthy. You can do it too.

Here is secret #14:

DISCIPLINE YOURSELF. Fill your life with activities and people that make you grow. Discard activities that have negative results in your life.

Shirley says:

Oooh... this is a hard one. I bet if I did just this one thing I'd be amazed at the way my life would improve!

Priorities

Tuesday, September 28, 2010

Self-Made Millionaires are not smarter or better than you. They have just discovered these secrets and used them to become wealthy. You can do it too.

Here is secret #12:

PRIORITIZE YOUR LIFE. Do what's most important first.

Notes from Shirley:

You mean not do the easiest most fun thing first? Not do the most distracting least important thing first? You mean not do ANYTHING and I do mean anything you can think of to avoid doing that most important thing first instead of last or not at all?

Yowsers! I'll have to change my whole life!

Anyone else have anything to say about this? What is your most important thing today? Have you started on it yet? Well? What are you waiting for?

Opportunity Knocks

Sunday, September 26, 2010

Self-Made Millionaires are not smarter or better than you. They have just discovered these secrets and used them to become wealthy. You can do it too.

Here is secret #10:

PREPARE FOR OPPORTUNITY. It will knock. Will you be ready?

Shirley says:

Didn't we do a project on this? Yes... here's the link: Opening Up. I think I'm going to go back and revisit those posts and see what looks helpful because in my life this is one of the areas where I tend to get messed up. Opportunity knocks - and I say, "Hang on... I'll be there in a minute." while I run around crazy trying to get it together enough to say OK come on in.

What do you guys think? Are you ready for opportunity? If not, what's needed? How do you get ready for the opportunities you ask for?

Own It

Saturday, September 18, 2010

Self-Made Millionaires are not smarter or better than you. They have just discovered these secrets and used them to become wealthy. You can do it too.

Here is secret #3:

THINK AND ACT LIKE YOU'RE THE OWNER OF A BUSINESS,
THE BUSINESS OF EVERYTHING YOU DO.

Even if you work for someone else, you're attitude will plant seeds for your independent greatness to grow.

My thoughts:

This one is interesting. So... how does the owner of a business act? I know some business owners I would never want to emulate... I've been the owner of a business, and I'm not sure my "business owner" activities were all that great. And having tried and fizzled out - how could I ever trust myself again?

I suppose I could learn from my mistakes... let me see... what were they? Trying to do everything alone - that was the biggest thing. Which led to burn out, and the stress of the constant pressure of having it all rest on me. I'm really not a very good boss of me. I expect way too much and I'm mean!

I wonder if it would be good to find a successful and happy business owner to emulate? Or, am I over-thinking this concept ... could it be as simple as having a "take charge" attitude? Or maybe... it's about taking responsibility. Being active vs reactive. Stepping up instead of stepping down.

Actually, this reminds me of a quote from the series OZ:

"You made your bed, now lie in it." Anybody wanna tell me what the fuck that means? You're gonna go to the trouble of making up your bed, smoothing out the sheets, fluffing up the pillows, just to ruin it all by lying down. The phrase should be, "You laid in your bed, now make it." Point being, you got to be responsible for your actions. Responsible.

~Augustus Hill

So what do you guys think? How is this useful? Am I on the right track? Totally out in left field? What? And what about you? How does this secret strike you? I'd love to hear your two cents!

Eight Laws Of Mind and Thought That Affect Change

Wednesday, July 14, 2010

We know as we begin the process of change, our own healing journey, that each one of us is and individual, unique to our own, with our own set of schemas, personal issues, and perception of how life has treated us. True? Perhaps not. Perceived fairness, or unfairness, good and bad memories, guilt, adaptive or maladaptive patterns do indeed all play into the factors that can either increase or decrease our chances for healing, but we can also look at common behaviors that we all fall into and from there begin to develop a guideline that can provide a basis for expectant behavior if we are to heal ourselves or facilitate a healing process in others. Some of these guides to facilitate or promote the healing process are:

The Eight Laws of Mind and Thought that Affect Change.

  1. Law Of Desire To make a change in our lives, we must TRULY want the outcome we claim to seek. Not passively, but truly a burning desire for the positive outcome. If there is a pattern of secondary benefit, that is, a subconscious reason for an existing condition, such as attention, love, monetary reward, sympathy etc. these can create obstacles to healing. Developing a belief in ourselves as independent and able people can result in an altogether different positive outcomes.

  2. Law Of Harmonious Attraction This is by far the most important law of thought; and it can be the easiest to apply once the simple concept is understood. Imagine a time when you thought about a desired result, saw yourself taking the steps to achieve the result and ACTUALLY ACHIEVED THE GOAL!! We have all done this to a certain extent. When we begin to understand the law of attraction, we can constantly attract what we desire. The Law of Manifestation implies that all we need to do is think of the result and we achieve it. Wouldn't't it be amazing if the universe worked that way? That theory has but one vital flaw, and that is we have to DO SOMETHING, do what it takes to reach our goal. No "new age"concepts here, it is pure and simple science.

When we can imagine a goal, visualize taking the steps necessary to gain that goal, a part of the Limbic system of the brain called the Reticular Activating system takes over and we guides us to do what it takes to achieve the desired result. The Reticular Activating System is the attention center in the brain. It is the key to "turning on your brain," and seems to be the center of motivation. The Reticular Activating System is connected at its base to the spinal cord where it receives information projected directly from the ascending sensory tracts. The brain stem reticular formation runs all the way up to the mid brain. As a result, the Reticular Activating System is a very complex collection of neurons, which serve as a point of convergence for signals from the external world and from interior environment. In other words, it is the part of your brain where the world outside of you, and your thoughts and feelings from "inside" of you, meet.

Professional athletes have known this for years, and we know that our clients will continue to attract conditions and situations that are in harmony with their thinking. It is important that what is NOT wanted be avoided in thinking. What our minds can imagine, our bodies can produce, both positive AND negative. Take time to examine your self-talk, is it filled with negative words such as "try", "should" "can't"? If so, consider changes in your language patterns to develop a positive outlook, imagine the results and watch yourself take the steps to achieve them. Do yourself a favor; take moment and "RAISE YOUR RETICULAR"!!!

  3. Law of Expectancy/Belief Success/Healing is achieved when the mind TRULY believes and sincerely EXPECTS the imagined result to happen. The old adage "Seeing is Believing", may work for some, but for making life changes we have to think in a different paradigm. A much better line of thinking would be the phrase, "Believing is SEEING". Success is achieved only with the trust and belief that it can be done. What we expect to happen does indeed happen. When we have faith and expectancy, beyond the shadow of a doubt, that we will get better, make more money, have a better relationship etc.; we can succeed in achieving that goal. This again also holds true for negative behavior as well. As a therapist, my clients come to me with a certain expectations that I will be able to help them overcome their issues. With this positive image and belief system set in place, the odds for success are greatly increased.

  4. Law Of Relaxation This is also the law of opposite effort. If we are doing manual work, we must put all our effort into it to be successful. When approaching mental work, we must step aside and allow it to come naturally. Desired outcomes cannot be forced or manipulated. Imagery is the tool; thought is the technique. If you consider thoughts as entities, therefore, they have the energy and ability to bring about a desired change.

  5. Law Of Visualization With guidance, we can generally be helped to see the positive end result. Negatives can be released and a new positive image is imprinted. This new positive image has to be a product of our own mind, our own positive self-images, one that we can relate to and above all, it must, BE BELIEVABLE!!!! If the image isn't believable, it will not bypass the critical factor in the brain and it will not become reality. Once we, begin to easily see ourselves becoming part of that believable new physical visual image, we become part of the positive resolution.

  6.  Law of Substitution Since the mind can only hold one thought at a time, and we choose what that thought will be at any given moment, it is essential that negative thoughts be cancelled out and the empty space filled with substituted positive thoughts, imagery and impressions. It is not enough to simply identify seed thoughts that create fear, or issues in our lives, those negative self-thoughts and self-talk must be eliminated and substituted. This procedure is one of the major differences between "talk therapy" and hypnosis. Using hypnosis, we can provide the imagery that provides a positive substitution.

  7. Law of Repetition The importance of repetition cannot be understated. We humans are creatures of habit, and therefore most of us aren't willing to make major life changes easily. Although we may tell ourselves, trying to convince ourselves that we accept change readily, our deep subconscious, the very place where change happens, gets stuck in past memories, frameworks, and schemas, and until we make the changes at the subconscious level, those changes will not stay in place. Luckily since humans are "meaning making machines", that is we have to place meaning on all aspects of behavior, and we CAN be essentially "reprogrammed" or "rewired", we CAN be successful if we use the simple technique of repetition. Habits are made and broken in a span of 21 to 30 days as a rule. Repetition for that length of time can greatly increase the odds of making permanent change.

  8. Law of Self Concept This is so very important. This law is the key to making positive changes in our lives. We must be able to feel deserving, worthy, and capable of achieving their desired outcome. If others; our parents, friends, spouses, siblings, are occupying rent -free space in our minds, these areas of control need to be released and reclaimed. We must begin to feel self-empowered, able to take responsibility for OUR OWN HEALING, or no such healing will ever take place. The need to end the self-defeating behavior and empty the bag of limiting thoughts and actions must take place to begin to become empowered individuals. For too long we may have been made to feel inferior, inadequate or deficient. We may have been told that we were fat, ugly, and stupid, that no one would want us; or others such words designed to imprison us in a shell and take away our natural born power. Only by building the self-esteem, the self worth can these issues be overcome and our personal power, our sacred space, our own self worth, be taken back. We need to feel safe that our anger is justified when appropriate, that it is OKAY to SHOW and FEEL emotions, not stuff them away, that we are worthy, deserving individuals that have a right to happiness, health, prosperity and love. Then, and only then can the change, the healing, which we all deserve, can begin.

Confidence Building Technique

Tuesday, July 06, 2010

This Technique helps you to get back your lost internal self confidence. You can turn back to this method whenever you require the power and self-confidence. The successful people in this world have one thing in common - tremendous power and self confidence. They have the capacity to convert their thoughts to action through their power and self confidence.

What is Power?

From the many meanings that can be given to the word, one of them is the person's ability to convert thoughts to action. Through this exercise you will be able to generate a solid power within you that will help you to use all the knowledge lying inside you.

Confidence Building Technique

  • You have to create a circle of confidence in front of you. Stand up straight on your feet and imagine the existence of a powerful circle in front of you. Stand firm and tall.

  • Focus on your inhalation and exhalation of breath. Imagine a liquid inside that circle in front of your body to be of any color of your choice. Recall any past incident of your life when you felt powerful and confident.

  • Just imagining this powerful and confident state will develop tremendous power and self confidence within your body. Slowly this state of power and self-confidence will increase in its intensity and you will strongly feel the increase.

  • A time will come when this state of tremendous power and self-confidence will reach its PEAK. When it reaches the peak, immediately close your fists and hit a punch in air. Shout in the loudest tone "YES".

  • Take a step ahead and come in the imagined circle. Once you are in the circle imagine that the colored liquid filled with confidence in entering your whole body. This liquid is increasing your power and confidence tremendously. You will have a totally new and "charged-up" experience. You can repeat if needed. Count 1,2, and 3 and then slowly open your eyes.

Advice
  • If you practice this technique two or three times a day for 21 days continuously then you will surely experience tremendous boost in your power and self-confidence.

  • Once you have practiced the technique enough, just close your eyes, remember a past incident where you felt powerful and self confident and which bring power in you. just when you remember that incident, shout "YES" loudly

Getting it done

Thursday, April 15, 2010

If you believe in what you are doing,
then let nothing hold you up in your work.
Much of the best work of the world
has been done against seeming impossibilities.
The thing is to get the work done.
